Whoever sets the BCU key controls the devices.
The BCU key is a password for KNX devices. If none is set, anyone with access to the bus can set one and lock everyone else out. In October 2021, attackers did exactly that in a building in Germany. Three quarters of several hundred devices stopped working.
In July 2026, the US agency CISA listed the underlying vulnerability CVE-2023-4346 as actively exploited. The KNX Association recommends setting a BCU key in every finished project and handing it over to the owner with the project documentation.

What the report is made for.
The report is a professional first assessment of the project file. It shows what is documented in the file and translates it into plain language. It does not inspect the installation itself.
The electrical contractor compares it with the installation on site, and the report supplies the actions to take. Whether a KNX interface can be reached directly from the internet is shown by the free KNX Security Check, run from the installation’s network. For an assessment with liability, for example in a legal dispute, a certified expert witness is the right choice.

Where does the .knxproj file come from?
Contractors export it in ETS via “Export project”. Operators get it from the installer, ideally at handover together with the project password.
What happens to the project file?
We use it only for your report and delete it no later than 14 days after delivery. The file is stored encrypted on servers in Frankfurt am Main and is never sent to an AI service.
Do you need the project password?
For the full report, yes, because devices and group addresses sit in the encrypted part of the file. Send the password separately by email. We use it only for the analysis and do not store it. Please keep the password protection in place, it is a good sign.
Can we hand the report to clients under our own name?
Yes, that is what the handover report is for. Your logo sits in the header of every page, LIMITLESS appears only small in the footer.
Does the report replace an on-site inspection?
It prepares it. The report describes the state of the project file, the contractor checks it against the installation and carries out the actions.
How do I pay?
By invoice, once you have the report. If it shows nothing new, drop us a line and the invoice is cancelled.
Does the SCL code fit our programming standard?
The draft is commented and structured in regions. Your programmer adapts it to your in-house standard during review.
